Glasgow is a big hit as a filming location for Hollywood movies and TV shows, due to the city’s grid street system and varied architecture.

Outlander Season 7 (Pollok Country Park)

Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe were spotted filming scenes in Pollok Country Park for the seventh series of the hit TV show which was released in June 2023. In the show’s previous seasons, Pollok Country Park has been used for the French countryside and the Blue Mountains of North Carolina. The first part of the seventh season aired to acclaim from fans and critics.

The Batman (Glasgow Necropolis and Cathedral Square)

The ancient cathedral precinct of Glasgow doubled as Gotham City for superhero blockbuster The Batman (2021). The film’s final scenes of the caped crusader and Catwoman were shot in the iconic Glasgow Necropolis.

1917 (River Clyde)

The Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes film 1917 was released in 2020. Glasgow’s former Govan Graving Docks on the River Clyde were used as a backdrop for the First World War epic. The setting isn't the only link to the city, as the film was co-written by Glaswegian screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

The Princess Switch: Switched Again (Glasgow Cathedral)

A key scene for this feel-good Christmas movie was filmed in the magnificent Glasgow Cathedral. The Princess Switch: Switched Again, which stars Vanessa Hudgens, was released in 2020.

Outlaw King (University of Glasgow)

The 2018 historical epic Outlaw King, which stars Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce and Florence Pugh as Elizabeth de Burgh, used several locations in Glasgow. The Cloisters at the University of Glasgow was transformed into a medieval banquet hall and Glasgow Cathedral doubled as Dumfries’s Greyfriars monastery.

The Wife (Hutchesons' Hall)

The elegant Merchant City district of Glasgow plays the part of Stockholm in the 2017 film The Wife. It stars Jonathan Pryce, Christian Slater, and Glenn Close, who was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA for Best Actress as the exploited spouse of a Nobel prize-winning author.

Vigil Season 2

The second season of BBC police drama Vigil follows Suranne Jones as DCI Silva and Rose Leslie as DI Longacre. The City Centre’s Berkeley Street and Elderslie Street feature as locations, as well as the Finnieston “Squinty” Bridge. Scenes set in the fictional Dundair military base were also filmed in Glasgow. Released December 2023.

The Buccaneers

Period drama The Buccaneers turned Glasgow’s George and Cochrane Streets into 1890s New York City. Dozens of actresses in Victorian dresses were spotted filming for the Apple+ TV Show, based on Edith Wharton’s final novel. Released November 2023.

Blind

The Hindi-language remake of the 2011 Korean thriller Blind was shot in Glasgow. Led by Bollywood superstar Sonam Kapoor, the film used Argyle Street and other city centre locations. Released July 2023.

Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny

Glasgow city centre was transformed into 1960s New York for The Dial of Destiny, the final instalment in the Indiana Jones series. US flags were hung across streets and an all-American parade marched up St. Vincent Street for the fifth film of the franchise. Released June 2023.

The Flash

Superhero Batman was in the city once again, this time for DC Studios’ The Flash. Both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton reprised both their roles as Batman in the time-travelling story. Released June 2023.

Dead Shot

Glasgow was turned into 1970s London for the Sky Cinema original film Dead Shot. The film stars Aml Ameen, Felicity Jones and Mark Strong, and is billed as a ‘vengeance-fuelled chase movie’ that has been praised for its authentic period details. Released May 2023.

Six Four

Glasgow was the setting and principal filming location for this 4-part TV series on ITVX. The compelling crime thriller follows a detective, played by Kevin McKidd, whose daughter is missing. Released March 2023.

Tetris

Glasgow’s industrial Tradeston played the part of 1980s Moscow for the filming of Tetris in early 2021. Taron Egerton, of Kingsman and Rocketman fame, stars in this story about the creation of the popular computer game. Released March 2023.

Girl

Director Adura Onashile’s debut feature was shot in 2021. Glasgow’s high-rise apartment buildings were used for many interior and exterior scenes. The film tells the story of the complicated relationship of a young Nigerian mother and daughter. Released January 2023.

Succession

The TV series Succession follows the lives of a feuding billionaire family headed by Scottish actor Brian Cox. Glasgow acts as both London and Dundee in the acclaimed HBO comedy drama. Scenes were filmed across the city in George Square, Cochrane Street, Kimpton Blythswood Hotel, the Laurieston Bar, and Park Circus. Released June 2018.

Patrick Melrose

Benedict Cumberbatch was seen running down many Glasgow city centre streets, including Cochrane Street, Bothwell Street and St Vincent Street, for Sky Atlantic’s 2018 drama miniseries Patrick Melrose. The series also features Glasgow’s famous Barras Market as a stand-in for New York City’s historic Meat-Packing District. Released May 2018.

Fast & Furious 6 / Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

The Merchant City was used for scenes in Fast & Furious 6 in 2012 and franchise spin-off Hobbs & Shaw in 2018. Superstar Idris Elba was in the city for Hobbs & Shaw to film high-speed car chases in Merchant City and Glasgow’s business district, which doubled as London.

TV shows filmed in the west end

Outlander: Blood of My Blood

The prequel to Starz’s Outlander follows the lives of main character Jamie Fraser’s parents 30 years before Outlander’s story takes place. Filming began in early 2024 in Glasgow’s historic Park Circus area and terraced streets around the west end of the city. Release date TBC.

Fear

Martin Compston stars in this psychological drama about a couple's move from London to Glasgow. In March 2024, filming took place at the Park District area within the west end, including Park Circus. Release date TBC.

TV shows filmed in the southside

Man & Witch

Filming for the children's fantasy adventure film Man & Witch, starring Sean Astin and Christopher Lloyd, took place in early 2021. Residential streets in Glasgow’s Shawlands neighbourhood in the Southside were key locations for the film. Release date July 2024.

The Control Room

The three-part BBC thriller The Control Room was filmed across Glasgow's southside and the city centre in 2021. It stars rising Glaswegian actor Iain De Caestecker. Release date July 2022.
