Just 10 minutes from the city centre, this little-known gem is the only church building in the world designed by Mackintosh and is a must see for his fans. Owned by the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, a registered charity, since 1999, this stunning former church is much in demand as a wedding and conference venue. The building's remarkable acoustic, combined with its uniquely atmospheric and uplifting interior, also make it very popular for concerts.
Designed in 1896 for the Free Church, the simplicity of the design is inspiring. The windows are Gothic in character but infused with flamboyant Art Nouveau tracery. Mackintosh’s distinctive floral motifs are easily recognised, particularly in the large western window. The blue heart in the centre flickers with changes of hue, as each individually coloured piece of glass catches the light.
And if you want to buy something truly distinctive, the shop stocks an extensive range of Mackintosh books and gifts. Any profits go to support the work of the Society and the upkeep of the Mackintosh Queen's Cross Church.
