Our friends from The 158 at Hutchesons Bar & Brasserie, who are ambassadors of Glenfarclas in Glasgow, have pulled together this blog on how to enjoy whisky whether you’re a novice or a Scotch whisky connoisseur to celebrate Visit Scotland’s Year of Food and Drink’s Whisky Month.
Whisky can be enjoyed in so many ways and most importantly, however you, the consumer like to enjoy it. To help you along the water of life journey here’s our top tips for finding your perfect dram.
Try a whisky that’s light
A great introductory whisky we would recommend comes from one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland from a village called Edradour in Perthshire. At the heart of their range, their Edradour 10 Year old is a rather unique single malt, a decidedly rum-like dram with a sweet finish that emerges from the combination of Sherry wood and the small Stills from their old farm distillery.
Mix it up in a cocktail
If you’re unsure of whisky on its own, twist it up in a cocktail and experience the flavours in a new way. We’ve shaken up Balvenie Doublewood with Aperol, lemon juice, sugar, bitters and ginger ale to create a Dufftown Fizz. It’s got a refreshing citrus kick and a great drink for spring summer.
Have a dram with some cheese…
Becoming very popular with our customers is having a dram instead of a dessert wine with your cheeseboard – especially with a creamy Lanark or Dunsyre Blue, or a smooth Ayrshire Aiket brie. It’ll transform the taste and flavour of your cheese, especially if you add a powerful peat-smokey whisky like a Talisker 10 year old, golden yellow in colour with a citrus sweetness to finish.
Try it with your favourite dessert
A firm customer favourite is our Poire Belle Helene Sundae at Hutchesons. The coolness of the ice cream, the texture of the pears and the warmth of the melted chocolate alongside the smoky finish of the Glenfarclas ensures a truly indulgent end to any meal. Our perfect pairing with this dish is a Glenfarclas 25 year old single malt whisky.
For something spectacular
Whisky is a very special affair at Hutchesons as we have the largest selection of Glenfarlcas outside of Speyside. With over 45 expressions from just the Famiy Casks this range is exceptional.
Launched in 2007, The Family Casks is a unique collection of single casks whiskies, with at least one cask bottled for every year, from a rare Glenfarclas 1953, bottled in September 2012 after spending 58 years in the cask to one distilled in 1998. This is Scotch malt whisky at its best. It needs no accompaniment.
